Spatial attention shifts contribute to the size congruity effect

چکیده
The size congruity effect in a numerical Stroop task shows that magnitude judgments of two numbers are faster and more accurate when the numerically larger number also appears physically size, indicating interaction between physical magnitudes. It has recently been suggested spatial shifts attention may contribute to effect. However, complete line evidence for attentional attribution remains be established. Therefore, present study aimed provide further demonstrations idea during regarding either or dimension numbers. Participants were sequentially simultaneously presented with pair single-digit Arabic whose magnitudes varied independently. They instructed perform judgment value paired Across three experiments, we consistently found was reduced eliminated pairs compared they simultaneously. Because sequential presentation mode successively at central fixation therefore should completely precluded by stimuli, findings support notion simultaneous play an important role generating both tasks.

The size congruity effect: is bigger always more?
When comparing digits of different physical sizes, numerical and physical size interact. For example, in a numerical comparison task, people are faster to compare two digits when their numerical size (the relevant dimension) and physical size (the irrelevant dimension) are congruent than when they are incongruent. Two main accounts have been put forward to explain this size congruity effect. Ac...
متن کاملStimulus-driven Shifts of Spatial Attention
Turning the eyes and the head to an object when it suddenly appears in the visual f ield, producing what is called exploration behavior, is a common experience for everyone. Sokolov (1963) described this phenomenon as the orienting reflex. The purpose of the orienting reflex is to allow the central system to identify the new element that has just occurred in order to prepare the whole organism ...
متن کاملThe spatial attention network interacts with limbic and monoaminergic systems to modulate motivation-induced attention shifts.
How does the human brain integrate information from multiple domains to guide spatial attention according to motivational needs? To address this question, we measured hemodynamic responses to central cues predicting locations of peripheral attentional targets (food or tool images) in a novel covert spatial attention paradigm. The motivational relevance of food-related attentional targets was ex...
متن کاملShifts of visuospatial attention do not cause the spatial distortions of the Roelofs effect.
When a visible frame is offset left or right of an observer's objective midline, subjective midline is pulled toward the frame's center, resulting in an illusion of perceived space known as the Roelofs effect. However, a large frame is not necessary to generate the effect-even a small peripheral stimulus is sufficient, raising the possibility that the effect would be brought about by any stimul...
متن کاملCovert shifts of spatial attention in the macaque monkey.
In the awake state, shifts of spatial attention alternate with periods of sustained attention at a fixed location or object. Human fMRI experiments revealed the critical role of the superior parietal lobule (SPL) in shifting spatial attention, a finding not predicted by human lesion studies and monkey electrophysiology. To investigate whether a potential homolog of the human SPL shifting region...
